Tourist Influx Increases
It is estimated that the north of Portugal will account for 6.6 million overnight stays by the end of 2016
Porto and the North of Portugal recorded almost five million overnight stays by the end of August 2016, half a million more than in the same month of 2015, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics released by the newspaper Expresso. The Tourism in Porto and North of Portugal considers to be the best summer ever for the northern region of the country and believes that if the trend continues, this will reach the end of the year with 6.6 million overnight stays.
The region is the fourth destination with more overnight stays registered over 2016, which is surpassed only by the Algarve, with 13 million, and the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, which reaches almost to 9 million. These data also reveals that Porto and North were the destination that grew most in Portugal in terms of hotel occupancy rate, which rose from 1.4 to 2.1. The traditional hotel is the most popular, followed by the local accommodation.
